Blog of the Grateful Bear

ramblings of a freelance panentheist {"all things are in God, and God is in all things"} . . . musings on Emergent spirituality, powerlifting, LGBTQueer issues, contemplative prayer, mysticism, cats, music, healing, and more. I like my coffee and my existentialism dark-roasted.

Solzhenitsyn: A Grateful Heart

“It was only when I lay there on rotting prison straw that I sensed within myself the first stirring of good,” says Alexander Solzhenitsyn. “Gradually, it was disclosed to me that the line separating good and evil passes, not through parties, states, nor between classes, nor between political parties, either, but right through all human hearts. So, bless you, prison, for having been in my life.” With Solzhenitsyn as our inspiration, let us take a moment to find the gift of one difficult thing we have faced and give thanks for its teachings.

~ From the book, A Grateful Heart, edited by M. J. Ryan

Thanks, Darrell!

The part of this quote about the line between good and evil running through every human heart has long been a favorite of mine--ever since I first read through Solzhenitsyn--but this fuller quote includes the context that exhorts us to be grateful for the means by which we have come to this kind of understanding. So, thank YOU for bringing this out for us!
Blessings,
Peter

I too have only heard the shortened version of the quote - so when I came across the full quote, I just had to share it (in keeping with my name, Grateful Bear). It has already generated some very good discussion at my Facebook group, "Coffee Mystics":

God does use curious timing sometimes.

I struggle a great deal with anxiety, and have just this morning decided to try and listen to the message anxiety brings, rather than to run from it.

As I was toying with whether or not this was 'right', I read your blog.

Curious timing, indeed.
