Blog of the Grateful Bear

ramblings of a freelance panentheist {"all things are in God, and God is in all things"} . . . musings on Emergent spirituality, powerlifting, LGBTQueer issues, contemplative prayer, mysticism, cats, music, healing, and more. I like my coffee and my existentialism dark-roasted.

After The Magic

Beliefnet has published an article by my friend Carl McColman, in which he writes about his conversion from Paganism to Catholicism. It's a great article: After The Magic.

That was an amazing article! I marked it, to come back to again. What an astounding adventure. I seem to keep hearing of others whose paths have taken twists and turns like this. It brings me great hope.

Perhaps I should go to Carl McColman's website and ask this, but where did he find the cool RCIA group? In the one in my hometown (which is supposed to be a liberal college town, so this was unexpected), the director stopped talking to me altogether when I mentioned being very upset about Ratzinger's election to the pontificate and having spiritual interest in Buddhism. I'd like to find a group that supportive somewhere; I know they have to be out there, and this post proves it.

Carl's blog is "Earth Mystic," at http://www.livejournal.com/users/earthmystic/

Carl was fortunate (maybe 'blessed' is a better word) to find a Roman Catholic church led by an old liberal Vatican II-style priest.

What's interesting is the process of disillusionment described in the loss of the "magic" through Paganism was the exact process I experienced through Catholicism. There is definitely a difference between mysticism and magic. Both exist in any religion, I imagine.

Why are Lucky Charms considered magically delicious. It is mystical in my experience.

Very interesting article, oh gratefulbear. I never was that involved with paganism (which was more than 10 years ago); I flirted with it, etc. But, I wound up remaining in the Judeo-Christian tradition. Thanks for the lead.
